Technical experts transitioning to leadership often struggle with the emotional side of the job.
You’ve gone from being required to justify all of your decisions with logic, to now being asked to use high amounts of emotional intelligence to care for your team.
One place that you can get stuck is where to start with empathy.
🤔You think, “I know I’m supposed to be more empathetic, but I don’t know how. What I see as examples are so extreme from what I’m doing now. It’s too scary, so I am not even going to try”.
I suggest emerging empathizers try using this magic question:
Wait for the answer. Then, try to see if you can take action in the direction of what you were just told.
That is it.
That is the first step.
🚀 From there, people will reveal more. Then, as your confidence increases, you can do more.
