Announcing the subject and co-author for book #2

I am thrilled to announce that I am collaborating with MIT classmate and passionate diversity advocate Amy Huchthausen for book 2 in my You’re More than a Diversity Hire series.

Women in college sports is such a timely topic.

Now, we’ve just launched our interview process so the book won’t be ready until early next year. I have a hunch that many of the challenges will still be there.

Our book, filled with actionable advice and personal stories from successful insiders, will be a valuable resource.

The 90 Day LinkedIn Challenge–60 Day Update.

From December 25 to March 25, I am going to post daily on LinkedIn. 

Why? 

The short answer is that it is free marketing for my new book. 

The long(er) answer is that since LinkedIn is the career and business social media platform and my book(s) are about career development, that is the best place I can get free exposure. And, by engaging on the platform in a strategic way, I can let my target audience know that I am a trusted and respected authority on the topics I write about.

One of my goals from last month was to increase efficiency on the platform and I have done it. I now spend about 10 minutes a day during the weekday. I keep a running list of ideas for polls and original content and can create something rather quickly. I typically do that over the weekend and post it some time during the week. The hardest part is typically cutting a post down to the 1300 character limit.

I still don’t have a lot to say about this number. I didn’t really know what would happen or if this is a good metric to follow. I will keep watching it to see if I can correlate it to something important.

Why experts have a hard time getting things done at work

In an iconic post, Paul Graham of Y-combinator discussed why managers like short blocks of time to take meetings, and makers (coders) like long blocks of time to be creative. Their solution: office hours.

Almost every expert I know feels deficient in “makers time”. They complain about not being able to do their REAL work because management schedules too many meetings. Not enough time to do experiments, analyze data, read and write papers, etc. The solution Y-combinator found probably won’t work for those in traditional organizations.

There might still be hope for you. Here is my recommendation for getting maker’s time in a manager’s world.

How to arrange your calendar to get more time to focus.

  • Look out 3-4 weeks from now and schedule a 3 hr block.
  • Name it something professional. Not, “me time”.
  • Make it recurring for 8 weeks.
  • Be flexible, give it up if your boss or colleagues need it.
  • Track your success rate, and any important feedback you got from colleagues.
  • Did you keep it 25-50% of the time? That is better than 0%!

How to keep manager’s from stealing your focus time.

Don’t block every opening in your calendar hoping for some “makers time”. It will backfire on you. As someone who schedules many meetings a week, I always try first to find an open slot. If nothing is open, I schedule indiscriminately and force people to adjust.

When I polled the eighty members of my exclusive LinkedIn group, the statistics were even worse. None, as in 0% of the women I polled, had help from their organization to chart their career path.

Private Network LinkedIn Survey: Do You Know How to Make Your Next Career Move?

The best way to figure out what you want to do next.

No matter what stage you are in your career, chances are you are not exactly sure what you want to do next.  You need to embark on an exploration process to get information to help you decide. The single best way I have found to get a good idea of what a job might be like is to ask people who are already doing it via informational interviews2

Informational interviews are a simple tool to collect firsthand information about a work environment or specific role you might be interested in. Even if you have no idea about what you are interested in, you can start talking to people to collect data.

How to overcome the common roadblocks to successful informational interviews.

There are a few things that make people reluctant to conduct informational interviews. I am going to tell you how to overcome those challenges and give you scripts you can use.

Challenge #1: I’m afraid to ask.

Asking for help is intimidating. Put yourself in the learning mindset and remember that this conversation is going to help you define the path for your career. The key to asking someone to grant you an informational interview is to be polite, prepared, and succinct. Below is a basic script for requesting the interview.


Script 1: Informational Interviews, Making the Ask

Hello [Their Name]

I am thinking about the next step in my career, and I am interested in learning more about what you do. Can we schedule a one-hour meeting at your convenience to talk?

Here are a few of my questions:

  1.  Question 1
  2.  Question 2
  3. Question 3

Boost your chances of getting a yes to an informational interview request by including a few of your questions in your request.

I have made this ask dozens of times, and I have never had anyone turn me down. It is only an hour, and I have prepared my questions in advance so the other person knows what to expect. 

Similarly, when I have been asked to be interviewed, I have been nothing but flattered. My only hesitation has been when I didn’t get any questions in advance, and I would spend some time wondering what they were going to ask me. So don’t do that; boost your chances of getting a yes to an informational interview request by including a few of your questions in your request. 

Challenge #2: I don’t know anyone I want to interview. 

If you don’t already know the person to whom you will be speaking, you can request that someone you know make a referral on your behalf. I have found that the easiest way to get someone to refer you is to do all of the work for them. In that case, you might need to send two notes. Send the first message to the person you know, asking for a referral. Send the second message to your target interviewee.


Script 2: Informational Interviews, asking for a referral

Hello [Name of who you  are asking to make a referral]

I am thinking about the next step in my career, and I am interested in learning more about what [target interviewee] does. I would like to schedule a meeting with them. Can you arrange an introduction for me?  I have included a message you could forward along if you want.

Thanks in advance for your help.

My colleague [your name] is [your current role].

She is exploring career options and is interested in learning a bit more about what you do.

Challenge #3: I don’t know what questions to ask.

You need to focus on what will be important for you to know about the job in three critical areas:

  • Skills (specific competencies that are required to do the job)
  • Incentives (how the job is funded, metrics used to evaluate performance)
  • Environment (day-to-day life)

One mistake that people make is only asking questions that help them learn if they are capable of doing the job. You also need to ask questions about whether or not you would want to do the job.

When I knew that I was no longer going to pursue an executive role in my old firm, I started to look around. At first I was convinced that I wanted to go into academia. I have always enjoyed teaching. I was spending my weekends at MIT, and the professors seemed to be having a really good time. 

I conducted four informational interviews at several universities. What I learned quickly changed my mind. There is a class system in academia. The upper class is the researcher track (writes grants and scientific publications). The lower class is the senior lecturer track (teaches and writes books). If I wanted to be in the upper class, where the real money is (unless you happen to write a viral best seller), it would be extremely difficult and would require me to almost start over.

Then, there was an issue with the incentives. In academia, generating value is measured in the form of publications and research grants. Whereas in the corporate world, value is measured based on currency—how much money did you save the company or how much revenue did you generate? I am much more motivated by the incentives in the corporate environment. I decided to stay corporate. But I also decided to teach. I lecture on innovation both inside my firm and at universities.

Here are a few sample questions you could adapt to meet your needs:

  • Skills (specific competencies that are required to do the job)
    1. What do you think is the most important skill to being successful in this field?
    2. What have you had to learn on the job vs. what you learned in formal education?
  • Incentives (how the job is funded, metrics used to evaluate performance)
    1. What are the key performance metrics that you are measured against? 
    2. What is your biggest challenge?
  • Environment (day-to-day life)
    1. What is your typical week like?  
    2. How much time do you spend with clients vs. the team? How much time do you travel?

 Challenge #4: I’m afraid of what my manager will think.

If you want to conduct informational interviews within your firm, I recommend you tell your manager about it. Keeping open and transparent communication with your manager is always the recommended action.


Script 3: Informational interviews, What to Say to Your Manager

Hi [your manager’s name],

I am thinking about my career development. I have noticed that target [interviewee 1] and [interviewee 2] are doing some interesting things, and I plan to talk with them about their work.

Anyone else you can think of that could be good for me to talk to?

[Your Name]


Most of the time, your message will be positively viewed. You are taking a proactive approach to your own career development. The most likely outcome will be a comment like “Good idea, let me know if I can help.” Unfortunately, this approach is not totally without risk. It is possible that you have a manager who has other ideas about what your career should look like and might bristle at the fact that you are being proactive. I recommend you do it anyway.

 If your boss has trouble with you having a conversation with someone in the organization, they are probably causing you other issues that you will need to deal with in the future. I had a manager tell me that I was being too ambitious thinking that I deserved to be talking to the chief technology officer. I had multiple problems with this person and was eventually able to get out of his organization. Not long after I became the Chief Innovation Officer at a different firm. 

On the other hand, if you are planning to talk to people outside of your firm, I recommend that you don’t disclose it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing it. Any professional in this day and age is expected to always be exploring opportunities. Even though this is just an information-gathering exercise, you don’t need to call attention to yourself.

Challenge #5: I don’t know how to conduct the interview.

You should also follow general meeting best practices. Make sure you are on time. Make sure you don’t go over time. Make sure you take notes.

You need to recognize that you are also being interviewed a little bit, too. Any good manager is always scouting for talent. Don’t worry! It just means you need to have the right mindset and prepare a little bit in advance. You are already making a good impression by reaching out proactively. And you already have your questions ready. Now you need to be prepared for their questions.

There are a few basic things that you could be asked. Just make a few notes on these topics, and you will have a very productive discussion.

  1. What do you do? (a one-minute self-introduction)
  2. What interested you in coming to talk to me?
  3. When do you think you are going to be ready to make the next move?

For question #3, I suggest that you be strategic. If you are talking with someone outside of your organization, you should give your current timeline or say “I am just exploring”. 

If you are talking with someone inside your organization, I recommend you always say “I am just exploring.”   You don’t want to have your boss be surprised in an HR discussion that you told another manager you were ready to move right away. Causing an embarrassing moment for your manager is a quick way to lose their support.

In addition to being prepared to answer a few basic questions, you should also follow general meeting best practices. Make sure you are on time. Make sure you don’t go over time. Make sure you take notes, you are going to need them later. 

Bonus: How to get access to an unlimited network.

If you want to make a great last impression and increase your network, send this follow up thank you message. 


Script 4: Informational interview follow up email.

Dear [Their Name]

Thank you again for your time. I really enjoyed our conversation. I especially appreciated your comments about [something specific that was mentioned during your discussion].

If you can think of anyone else I should speak with, I would appreciate your input.

By being polite, and asking for a referral you have left a positive impression and increased your network. You won’t always get a new name, but even if you only get a referral 25-50% of the time, your network will expand quickly.

By around day 15, this activity went from being a burden to being fun. I became much more relaxed about engaging with the platform and reached my goal of taking less than 20 minutes a day to complete the challenge. As a result, I occasionally posted more than one thing in a day, hence achieving > 100% adherence. One tip I learned is that I can save posts for later. That was great because if there was a day that I couldn’t quickly find something to comment on, I could go to my saved section.

I don’t have a lot to say about this number. I didn’t really know what would happen or if this is a good metric to follow. I will keep watching it to see if I can correlate it to something important.

Other observations

Different types of content get very different response rates. 

Original content was more popular (as measured by interactions after 1 week) than commenting on other people’s posts or commenting on outside content. However, I was more likely to get a connection request when I commented on someone else’s posts. This phenomenon is something to keep watching. And unsurprisingly, people love polls.

I am getting lots of positive feedback from colleagues about my LinkedIn activity.

Several times a week a colleague will either send me a note or mention during a meeting that they are enjoying what I am posting on LinkedIn. This is of course a nice feeling but I think it is more than that. Given that I am unable to “take a coffee” as they say in Europe, with my colleagues, being able to chat about LinkedIn has given us common interest discussion topics that aren’t related to COVID-19.  

What I am going to try next month

February will be about actively promoting the book now that it is on Amazon, trying to increase the amount of original content I post, and improving my efficiency on the platform. 

Why I am writing on LinkedIn for 90 days straight, plus a recap of week 1.

From December 25 to March 25, I am going to post daily on LinkedIn.

The long(er) answer is that since LinkedIn is the career and business social media platform and my book(s) are about career development, that is the best place I can get exposure. And, by engaging on the platform in a strategic way, I can let my target audience know that I am a trusted and respected authority on the topics I write about.

I know little about social media platforms and I don’t want to spend my whole life on them. So I did a bit of research and settled on this 90-day challenge which synthesizes what seems to be two key principles of social media engagement: consistent interaction + relevant content (1) (2).

Here is how I have defined my 90-day challenge:

What counts:

  1. Comments on someone else’s post.(Good)
  2. Bringing in outside articles and adding 2-3 lines of commentary. (Better)
  3. Writing original content.(Best)

Topics I will write about:

  1. Women in STEM
  2. Women in male-dominated industries
  3. Diversity and inclusion
  4. Career development
  5. Leadership
  6. Potpourri (not the dried flowers version, the jeopardy version, meaning any topic I deem interesting)

Stats I will track on a monthly basis:

  1. Challenge adherence(%): # of days I posted/#of days in the month. I will allow myself days off by doubling up. I think there are ways to schedule posts but I haven’t figured it out yet.
  2. Followers(#): # of people following me on LinkedIn. At the start of the challenge the number was 3,389. I hope that grows.
  3. Leads(#): I will consider a lead anyone who reaches out to ask me to collaborate, speak at a book club or conference, or any other activity that will cost me nothing but will promote my current book or future books. 

Week 1 recap:

The good news. It is actually fun. It is stimulating me to read more and form an opinion about different topics. Old friends and colleagues who I haven’t talked to in a while are reaching out. Someone even noticed that I have a book coming out. (I put a picture of it in my profile).

The bad news: I am woefully inefficient at this. It is taking me way too long to write a couple of sentences. I am concerned about grammar, syntax, what will my boss think if he sees it, etc. I am also preoccupied with following the number of post views and reactions I get. Hopefully this is due to the newness of it all. I will to monitor the amount of time I spend on the challenge and put in some controls to adjust it. Once I start back at work, I need to get this down to 10-15 minutes/day.

ARE YOU A SMART, TALENTED, TRAILBLAZER? (QUIZ)

Early in 2020, I asked 80 women from my own personal network to join my newly created LinkedIn group for women in male-dominated industries. If I can brag for just a moment, the women in my network are awesome.  Whether they just finished their degrees as the first one in their family to go to college, they are the CEOs of major companies, or somewhere in between, they are all bright, purposeful, and driven women. I was pleasantly surprised that all but  one person joined my group.

What surprised me even more was their enthusiasm about having been asked to join . Some told me they were honored that I would consider them. Others said they were so happy, they were crying.  I was shocked by the outpouring of emotion that came from my invitation.

I think I touched on an important realization. Despite how successful we may seem to the outside world, our day-to-day lives in male-dominated workplaces can be a struggle. We can feel underestimated, sidelined, and overwhelmed. In the midst of all of those feelings, we can forget that in reality we are smart, talented, trailblazers.

According to McKinsey, women in male-dominated fields are three times likely to feel as if  they have to provide more evidence of their competence than others do.[i]

How do I know?

Because you have already figured out how to get to where you are today despite having to go through the adversities I listed above, and probably many, many more.

Not convinced? Of course, you are not. Women in male-dominated fields are three times more likely to feel as if  they have to provide more evidence of their competence than others do.[i]

But here is the thing, you’ve already demonstrated that you are smart, tenacious, thoughtful, and resilient. You’ve already persevered through rigorous training in what was likely a challenging and sometimes isolating environment. 

Don’t get me wrong, you might have some gaps in skills or experiences that you need to close in order to reach your next goal. In my book and in my blog, I write about how to diagnose what those gaps are and close them. 

But most importantly, I write to remind you:

You already have what it takes to do anything you choose to do.

You are a smart, talented, trailblazer.
