MEL #051 | Leadership Lessons From a Year of Engineering Stories with Dr. Angelique Adams
As we wrap up the year, I want to look back at some of the conversations that shaped the first season of the Mastering Engineering Leadership podcast.
The themes were powerful on their own, but they become even richer when we anchor them in the voices of the leaders who shared their stories.
Let me walk you through some of the patterns that stood out and the episodes that brought them to life.

Hi, everyone! Angelique here.
If you want to revisit any of the conversations I mentioned today, you can find episode links and other resources in the show notes at drangeliqueadams.com/podcast.
Let me start with something that came up in so many conversations. Leadership begins with identity and intent.
Early in the year, Jeff Bohanan talked about stepping into leadership during moments of crisis. He described how his identity shifted from problem solver to stabilizer and coach. In a different way, Andrea Yates shared how her leadership confidence developed over time shaped by self-awareness, feedback, and a willingness to grow into responsibility. Their stories reminded us that leadership starts long before the title. It starts when you decide who you want to be as a leader.
Another theme that came through repeatedly was the role of emotional intelligence. Bob Colwick captured this beautifully. He talked about the moment he realized that fixing technical problems was no longer his primary job. His job was to build trust, shape relationships, and understand what people needed during stressful situations.
In a different episode, Sharon Goh described how empathy and experimentation shaped her leadership in robotics and tech. These moments showed us that technical range matters, but emotional range is what unlocks real influence.
Let me shift to something more operational.
Many guests talked about the value of structure, systems, and processes. Dennis Burianek shared how pattern recognition and discipline communication help him lead complex engineering programs at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. And Chris Ritter described how he used consistent routines and documentation to lead cross-functional collaboration in a legacy heavy manufacturing environment. Their stories underscored a simple truth.
Successful leadership is not about personality. It’s about building processes that make good decisions repeatable.
Performance was another topic that surfaced again and again, but not in the traditional sense of metrics and targets.
Giacomo Mascillaro talked about performance as resilience. He moved from mechanical engineering to cybersecurity leadership. He learned that growth comes from stepping into discomfort and expanding the range of challenges you’re willing to take on. Anthony Andrews shared how performance shifted for him when he realized leadership was not about taking charge but about helping his team develop. These episodes reminded us that performance is not just output, it’s growth.
And of course, one of my favorite themes surfaced constantly. Leadership journeys are never straight.
Whitney Gaskins moved from engineering to retail to academia and then into community impact leadership. Chris Whaley talked about moving from hands-on engineering work into project leadership and then into broader people and organizational leadership roles. And Mike Stone talked about transitioning across industries and the personal work required to grow into each new phase. These stories remind us that engineering leadership is not linear. It is iterative. It evolves as we evolve.
As we head into the new year, I want to leave you with one question. What is one leadership shift from this season that you want to carry forward? Maybe it’s listening more intentionally. Maybe it’s building a simple process that supports your team. Maybe it’s reconnecting with your purpose or experimenting with new leadership behaviors choose one and practice it.
Thank you for being part of this community and for making space in your week for these conversations.
Before we step into the holiday break, I have one more episode for you. In it, I’ll share the story behind this podcast and the lessons that I’ve learned from hosting it this year. I hope you will join me for that reflection.
