What I Do

Experience/Credibility
- 20+ years leading R&D and innovation in industry. I held leadership roles across engineering, operations, strategy, and innovation at global industrial companies, ultimately serving as Chief Innovation Officer.
- Led technical innovation from research toward commercial application. As an innovation executive, I worked with scientists and engineers to connect sophisticated technical work with business needs, investment decisions, and market opportunities. I also led industry/university partnerships and scouted startups.
- Developed researcher readiness with 250+ scientists and engineers. I have trained more than 250 researchers through engagements that evolved into my flagship program, Commercialization Catalyst™.
- Recognized for innovation in technology transfer. My Commercialization Catalyst™ collaboration through multiple cohorts with Oak Ridge National Laboratory received a 2025 Federal Laboratory Consortium Technology Transfer Innovation Award. My Oak Ridge collaborators also won 2 internal Department of Energy awards for the same work.
- Develop the next generation of technical leaders. I am an engineering professor and founding director of the Leadership in Engineering & Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Tennessee.
- Technical and business credentials. I hold a Ph.D. in Energy & Mineral Engineering from Penn State and an MBA from MIT.
Why Focus on Researchers
Research institutions have invested heavily in the infrastructure that moves discoveries toward impact: technology transfer, sponsored research, industry partnerships, entrepreneurship programs, funding, and facilities.
But much of research translation still depends on a very human moment:
A researcher sitting across from someone outside the research community and talking about their work.
And we largely leave those moments to chance.
Researchers spend years learning how to succeed in the research environment.
They learn to prioritize the technology, emphasize precision, defend their conclusions, and demonstrate expertise.
Then we put them in meetings with industry, where the audience is trying to understand something different:
Why does this matter to us? What problem could it solve? How does it compare with what we do today? What would it take to move forward?
When those conversations don’t go well, institutions often compensate by working around researchers by trying to distill their work into templates and having other staff convey relevance. Or they send researchers through programs designed to turn them into entrepreneurs and salespeople.
I don’t think either is the answer.
Researchers don’t need to stop being technical experts. They need to learn what a different room requires and how to adapt while bringing the expertise only they can bring.
And this shouldn’t be left to individual experience or natural talent.
It’s too important.
Technology transfer, industry partnerships, research leadership, faculty development, and researchers themselves all benefit when researchers can engage effectively in high-stakes external conversations.
This is a high-leverage capability that cuts across the entire research enterprise.
I believe building it intentionally is the next opportunity in research translation.
This Is Personal for Me
Early in my career, I knew what it felt like to be left out of important conversations because I was considered “too technical”.
It is frustrating to know that you have something valuable to contribute and still struggle to get others to understand why it matters. And it is painful to watch opportunities go to people who have learned how to navigate those rooms when you haven’t.
Eventually, I learned how to do it.
It changed the trajectory of my career.
Then, as a leader, I saw what happened when I helped other scientists and engineers develop the same capability.
Their expertise hadn’t changed.
Their ability to get that expertise heard had.
That’s ultimately why I do this work.
Yes, I want more of the dollars we invest in research to make their way into use and benefit society.
But more than that, I want researchers to have access to the opportunities their expertise deserves.
Research institutions shouldn’t have to work around their researchers to build support for their work.
And researchers shouldn’t have to watch important opportunities pass them by because no one prepared them for a different room.
I know how to prepare them for the different room.
That’s the work I’ve chosen to do.
